The Los Angeles Lakers are expected to be back to open their NBA training camp during the first week of October, according to Jerry West, the team's vice president, who is on Maui for the Magic Johnson-Jerry West Executive Basketball Camp in Lahaina.

"There will be an announcement real soon," said West. "There are a few finishing touches we need to do."

The Lakers have been holding their training camp at Klum Gym on the University of Hawaii campus every year since 1988 except for 1991, when they trained in Palm Springs, Calif., because of a preseason commitment in Paris.

They've held two-game exhibition series at Blaisdell Arena after each camp. But they are looking into the possibility of playing at UH's 10,000-seat Special Events Arena this year.

"Obviously, it'll be at one of two places, that's for sure," said West, who added that this year's preseason opponent will be named when the dates and site are announced.

Last year, the Lakers opened the exhibition season against the Seattle SuperSonics.

Magic Johnson said he plans to hold a basketball camp for youngsters next summer at the UH arena.
