Kim, Kotaka honored
for accomplishments in June


Bev Kim and Chuzo Kotaka have been cited by the Honolulu Quarterback Club as its Sportspersons of the Month for June.

Kim captured the women's state amateur golf championship, and Kotaka guided the International Karate Federation team from Hawaii to success at the AAU/USA National Championships.

Kim and Kotaka will be honored at the Quarterback Club meeting Monday at the Flamingo Chuckwagon on Kapiolani Boulevard.

The luncheon meeting begins at 11:30 and is open to the public.

Other guests include Kalaheo High School boys' basketball coach Pete Smith and Guy Benjamin, offensive coordinator for the University of Hawaii Rainbows.



SPORTS PROGRAM DEBUTS

SportsGroove, a weekly sports magazine program that will feature packaged stories relating to Hawaii's sporting community, will make its debut on KWHE TV-14 (Oceanic 11, Chronicle 7) tonight at 8.

The host is Robert Langpaap.

There is a working agreement with the Honolulu Quarterback Club to highlight its weekly featured speaker on SportsGroove.

KISMET STILL LEADS

Kismet continued to lead the Victoria-Maui yacht race yesterday.

The Division 3 yacht, skippered by Charlie Guildner of Bellingham, Wash., covered 170.3 nautical miles to bring it to within 1,247.8 miles of Maui.

Farr-Ari, skippered by Bill Walton of Des Moines, Wash., led the Division 2 boats and was sixth overall. Farr-Ari made 187.7 miles and was 1,500.3 miles from Maui.

Luna Barbara, with Dennis Manara of Vancouver, British Columbia at the helm, led the Division 1 boats. Luna Barbara was eighth overall after covering 247 miles and was 1,605.1 miles from Maui.



PHILIP IN THE LEAD

Alistair Philip is the Mauna Kea Pro-Am golf tournament's individual leader with a 69 after yesterday's first round at the Mauna Kea Course.

In team play, Art Schilling and his team have a four-stroke lead (130) over Don Brown's team.



RAINBOWS HONORED

Three University of Hawaii baseball team members have been named to the 1996 Western Athletic Conference academic all-WAC sports teams.

The three are Jaime Ahu, a senior majoring in political science who has a 3.33 grade point average; Carter Siu, a junior majoring in Hawaiian with a 3.59 GPA, and Kamuela Binkie, a sophomore majoring in Hawaiian Studies with a 3.43 GPA.



CITY TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

The annual Honolulu City Tennis Championships are scheduled for July 13-14 at the Diamond Head Tennis Center.

BASKETBALL CAMPS CANCELED

The Dick Luther Action Basketball Camps and Coaches Clinics scheduled for the end of this month and August have been canceled due to lack of interest.
