Kids get to try their hand at interactive sports activities at Bishop Museum.


Sports of sorts

It's not Family Sunday, but close. Bishop Museum's "SPORT Sunday" 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. this weekend will offer free admission for local residents with I.D. It include fitness demonstrations, childrens' activities and a Hawaii vs. Japan sumo tournament.

It also introduces the Woody's Hot Dogs "Keiki Hawaiian Games," a competition for keiki ages 5 to 12 in four traditional Hawaiian games.

The day starts with a 9 to 11 a.m. Breakfast for Champions with an opportunity to meet Hawaii's Olympic champions, followed by games registration at 11 a.m., and competitions at noon. "Games" continue July 14, 21 and Aug. 4.

Visitors can also check out "SPORT," the museum's current interactive exhibit, featuring more than a dozen activities exploring the science of sports. Call 847-3511.


Ups and downs

The State Yo-Yo Championship has nothing to do with playing the cello. Contestants can put their own spin on the semi-finals occuring 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Ala Moana Center Stage. Winners will challenge Maui semi-finalists at noon, July 28, also at Ala Moana.

Registration is at 1 p.m., and there are four age divisions. Watch demonstrations of yo-yo tricks at 7 p.m. tomorrow and Saturday on Center Stage. Information: 942-8799.


Midget submariners

Atlantis Submarines is hosting a "Na Hoa O Ke Kai" Keiki Day 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the Kapiolani Park Bandstand area, with ocean displays, entertainment, arts and crafts, games. Information: 973-9832.
