Illegal to light fireworks
before 9 p.m. on Fourth

QUESTION: I know there have been changes in the state's fireworks law. When can I legally ignite fireworks for the Fourth of July holiday and where can I observe aerial fireworks demonstrations?

ANSWER: It was legal for licensed fireworks dealers to begin to sell fireworks yesterday. All fireworks sales have to be completed by 9 p.m. July 4. No permits are needed. However, fireworks cannot be ignited until 9 p.m. July 4 and must end by 1 a.m. July 5.

It is still illegal for minors under the age of 18 to purchase fireworks. However, Fire Battalion Chief Charles Wassman, head of the Fire Prevention Bureau, said children under 18 years of age can play with fireworks but only if they are supervised by an adult. Aerial fireworks remain outlawed on Oahu.

But legal Fourth of July aerial fireworks displays - to begin between 8 and 8:30 p.m. - will be held on Sand Island on July 3; and on Magic Island, Hickam Air Force Base, Schofield Barracks, Flat Island in Kailua and Oahu Country Club on July 4.

Violators are subject to a misdemeanor penalty. Off-limits to fireworks are:
