Marco M. Meyer, 79, of Wailuku, a former Maui County councilman, died yesterday in St. Francis Hospital.Meyer, who also was on the Board of Supervisors, held elected Maui County office in years 1958-74.
He later was appointed county deputy fire chief by Maui Mayor Elmer Carvalho after a 1974 Council re-election bid failed.
He also served on the Maui Police Commission in years 1953-55 and delivered U.S. mail under contract. His business experience included ownership of a Dutch Boy Paints outlet.
Born in Honolulu, he was a Purple Heart veteran of World War II, serving in Europe, and belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. A graduate of St. Louis College, now St. Louis High, he later studied cost accounting. His resume also included Army Schools -- engineers, infantry, artillery, armor, special demolition, mine warfare and weapons.
"He always used to try to help people out," recalled son Marco M. Jr., a retired Honolulu Fire Department battalion chief. "I know a lot of people came to him. He tried the best he could to help them."
Meyer also is survived by daughters Pamela Kepani and Michele Galam and adopted daughter Kari Lee Meyer; brother Henry; sister Hannah Stewart; 16 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
