OPENING

Academy Art Center, 1111 Victoria St., 532-8700. Pagdiriwang '96 photo exhibit on "The Filipino's Continuing Quest for Freedom and Dignity," on view through June 29. Pagdiriwang is a year-long celebration of the centennial of the Philippine Revolution, the 90th anniversary of the arrival of Filipino laborers in Hawaii and the 50th anniversary of Philippine independence from the United States. Reception 5 p.m. Friday.

Aloha Tower Marketplace. Raku Ho'olaule'a exhibition of pottery and sculpture opens with a reception 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the Ferry Terminal. Robert Sunday selected these pieces from a weekend's worth of firing at Kualoa Park. Reception includes a tea ceremony conducted by the Urasenke Foundation on Chanoyu. Hawaii Craftsmen show continues through July 14.

Olaloa Community Center, 95-1050 Makaikai St., Mililani, 626-2323. Exhibit of oil paintings by the Olaloa Drawing & Painting Class on view Friday and Saturday.

Pauahi Tower Gallery, 1001 Bishop St. "Tranquility," paintings by Fong Tran, opens Saturday. Show continues through July 20.

Coffee Time Cafe, 3506 Waialae Ave., Kaimuki. "Little Blue Deluxe (with Kim Chee)," sculpture of glass, metal and found objects by Eric Keala Chun and abstract oil paintings by Gelareh Khoie, through Saturday.

Contemporary Museum, 2411 Makiki Heights Drive, 526-0232. "Graveyard Shift," prints and drawings of abandoned cars and trucks by Faith Milnes, on view through July 7. Milnes portrays the old vehicles as metaphors for aging and the slow journey down to an inevitable end. Free admission on the third Thursday of each month. "Tubers," sculpture installation by Jodi Endicott, on view through Aug. 12. Installation of Endicott's interactive water scene, which includes larger-than-life concrete figures on what used to be tennis courts, continues on July 19.

Three exhibits feature contemporary works through Sept. 8. "Public Art" from the collection of the City and County of Honolulu presents more than 100 works, a majority by Hawaii artists; "Leaving the Century," videos by 20 media artists, arrives from the Video Data Bank, School of the Art Institute of Chicago; "Exquisite Vessels" in ceramic, metal, glass, wood and fiber were acquired through the Sibyl Heide Fund.

"Century" unfolds in five parts: "Personal Vision," through July 7; "Cultural Identities," July 9 through 28; "Self Regard," July 30 through Aug. 11; "Framing Politics," Aug. 13 through 25; and "Women Unveiled," Aug. 27 through Sept. 8.

525-8066. "Local Style 2," works by Hawaii artists such as Mabel Alvarez, Jean Charlot, Isami Doi, Franco Salmoiraghi, Toshiko Takaezu and others, on view through July.

Firehouse Gallery, Waimea, Big Island. "Baskets and Beyond," baskets, miniatures and watercolors by Sue Boyz, on view in June. Boyz uses philodendrons, pine needles, seaweed, silk scraps and banyan tree roots as basket material.

Hawaii Pacific University Art Gallery, 45-045 Kamehameha Highway, Kaneohe, 233-3167. "Specific Pacific: Paintings about the Ocean" by Alison Manaut, on view through Aug. 9.

Honolulu Academy of Arts, 900 S. Beretania St., 532-8700. "Images of the Ming and Qing Dynasties" examines the possessions of distinct social classes. "Taisho Chic" explores modern influences during Japan's Taisho period. "Spring Blossoms" celebrates the season in Chinese paintings and ceramics over the centuries. Free admission on the first Wednesday of each month.

"Bright and Daring" and "Feminine Elegance" display Japanese kimonos through July 7. "Bright" examines a cross-cultural genre with bold designs that appeared in the first half of the 20th century, while "Elegance" features exquisite traditional patterns.

"Windows on Enchantment" opens onto the world of children's book illustration, through July 16. Exhibit's focus is on knights and ladies, dragons, wizards, medieval legends and Arthurian tales, in particular as they appear in the works of Trina Schart Hyman.

"Hawaii and Its People," art from Hawaii's pictorial heritage, on view through July 21.

"Samurai Warriors" explores Japan's tradition of swordsmen who were also poets, artists and judges, through Aug. 4. With prints portraying episodes between the 1st and 16th centuries, garb and armor from the early 19th century, arms and other items from medieval Japan.

"Americans Abroad," prints of European cities and towns by American artists, 1880-1940, on view through Aug. 15.

Honolulu Zoo Fence, Monsarrat Avenue. Paintings by local artists on view 9 a.m. to noon Tuesdays, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

at Aloha Tower Marketplace and Showroom. Very Special Arts Hawaii, an affiliate of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, seeks to illustrate the importance of art and cultural/community participation. VSAH offers arts education for people with disabilities. Free admission.

New gallery and surf shop: Naturally Hawaiian Gallery-N-Gifts, owned by artist Patrick Ching, and Point Break Surf Company have their grand opening 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 29 and 30 at 41-1025 Kalanianaole Highway, next to Mel's Market in Waimanalo.

Workshops: The Contemporary Museum presents a series of workshops on ideas and techniques with artists featured in the "Public Art" exhibit, on alternating Saturdays through Aug. 24. The first workshops will be June 29, with Nancy Poes on painting gardens in sunlight and shade using transparent watercolors, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., and with Sally French on using wax in painting, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Each workshop is $25.
