Investigators are getting more work lately from insurance companies, said William L. Shea III, recently named to manage the Maui office of Goodenow Associates Inc.

"In the fraud market, there are always new scams. It's a big business," Shea said. "Insurance companies are now using investigators and spending a few dollars, instead of paying off claims and spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to settle."

Shea has nearly 15 years of experience investigating product liability, personal injury and insurance related cases in Hawaii. For the past four years, he was with Wood & Tait Inc. on the Big Island.

Shea earned a bachelor's degree in criminology at Southern Oregon State College.

Goodenow Associates, founded in 1966, is based in Honolulu. The company provides litigation support, insurance fraud investigations, video and photo surveillance, missing person searches, and background checks.
