Groups criticize police
department on sex harassment

Three civil rights advocacy groups today protested the way the city is handling cases concerning sexual harassment litigation.

The groups, who called on the Honolulu Police Department to stop abusing its authority in sex harassment cases against women, have filed a motion to appear in federal court as an amici curiae, or friend of the court, on behalf of a former policewoman.

And they are asking fellow police officers to step in when they see sexual harassment occurring in the workplace.

The groups claim HPD has been misusing taxpayer dollars by researching sexual history and gynecological records in the Clarissa A. Barta case.

Barta, who worked at the Airports Division from 1989 to 1992, filed suit in July 1994 claiming she was physically and sexually assaulted, subjected to pornographic material, asked for dates and subjected to vulgar comments.

Grand jury reviewing Ireland murder

An investigative grand jury is scheduled to meet again today on the Big Island to consider the Dana Ireland murder case.

Ireland was 23 years old when she was hit by a vehicle while riding a bicycle on Christmas Eve 1991. She was taken to a remote spot where she was raped and left to die.

Her father, John Ireland, reached at his home in Virginia, says a reliable source has told him that today's grand jury session deals with the case.

But Ireland says he's worried the prosecution isn't proceeding quickly enough.

The statute of limitations for rape and kidnapping expires in 1-1/2 years.

Because this grand jury is investigative, it can only hear evidence. Another grand jury would have to decide whether to bring an indictment in the case.

UH lecturers form support group
to protect rights

Lecturers at the University of Hawaii at Manoa are organizing to protect their jobs in the face of budget cuts.

Barbara Norfleet, an organizer of University Lecturers United, says more than 300 lecturers are employed at Manoa and hundreds of others work throughout the 10-

campus system.

She says they provide inexpensive yet high quality instruction - but they lack job security, health benefits and union representation.

Donald Dugal, an art lecturer at Manoa for 25 years, says lecturers have the same amount of work as professors yet are paid half as much.

The group is working with the UH Professional Assembly to include part-time lecturers in the union as part of a formal group representation.

Confrontation, arrest
after theft on Kalakaua

A 37-year-old immigrant who was nearly deported four years ago was charged by police yesterday with armed robbery and drug offenses.

Requested bail for Bui Ahn Cong is $110,000. Cong was spotted with stolen items Saturday night in a Kalakaua Avenue parking lot by a man returning to his car.

Following a confrontation, the suspect returned some items and then fled on foot.

The victim gave chase and was assisted by a security officer. Cong allegedly slashed at the security officer with a screwdriver before being subdued with pepper spray.

Cong had the victim's wallet when arrested, police said.

In June 1992, Cong was scheduled to be deported, but the order was canceled by the U.S. Immigration & Naturalization Service, police said.
