THE 23rd King Kamehameha Hula Competition, Hawaii's oldest, has a new twist this year.

The 'auana division will have a new category: kupuna wahine. Although kupuna have competed in the contest previously, this will be the first time there is a specific category for women 45 years and older.

Seven kupuna wahine 'auana groups are entered, including one from Japan.

The category will become a permanent part of the annual competition, said Keahi Allen, executive director of the State Council on Hawaiian Heritage, which sponsors the contest. "Many older women in their 50s and 60s get together for exercise doing the hula so they stay with the halau and perform," Allen said.

This year's competition includes 62 performances by 21 halau.
