Cute cook books
shaped to specifics

Celestial Arts is making cookbooks a little more appetizing, by offering four titles in the shapes of eggplant, tomato, pizza and a picnic basket to coincide with the book titles, i.e. "Totally Eggplant CookBook."

Each book, measuring no more than 5 by 6 inches, contains 95 pages with brief introductions and, in the case of the "Totally Picnic Cookbook," some helpful packing tips.

A sampling of ideas from the latter include Swordfish Sandwiches with Olive Garlic Spread, and for a Hot Time Summer in the City, a four-part menu that includes Poached Tarragon Salmon, Lemon Garlic Pasta, a Tomato Red Onion Salad and Espresso White Chocolate Brownies.

The "Totally Pizza Cookbook" offers such combos as Roasted Potato and Prosciutto, and Chinese Chicken and Peppers.

Most book stores will be able to order the books per customer request if you can't find them on the shelves. The books cost $4.95 each.

Chuck roast is cheap

One of the best buys in supermarkets this week is chuck roast and chuck steaks. At Foodland, a seven-bone roast is selling for $1.79 a pound through June 25. Beef blade chuck roast is $1.59 a pound.

At Safeway, bone-in beef chuck steaks are 99 cents a pound in their "Valu Packs." You've got to buy three pounds or more, but a minimum of three bucks for a weekend barbecue for two sounds like a good deal.

Times removes the bone from the chuck roast on sale at $1.39 a pound.

In addition to roasting or throwing chuck steaks on the grill, you can chop it into cubes and throw it into chili or beef stew.

For dessert, pick up cantaloupes at Star markets for 39 cents a pound. Also at Star: fresh, whole New Zealand salmon at $2.99 a pound.
