Six qualify for Publinx tourney

Kalani Kiaaina, who is back home for the summer from Rice University, shot a 36-hole score of 143 to lead three Kauai qualifiers for the U.S. Amateur Men's Public Links Championship July 15-20 at the Wailua golf course.

Also qualifying Saturday at Wailua were Del Marc Fujita (145) and Mark Weatherwax (148). Winston Ogata (150) is the first alternate.

Steve Yogi (136), Clayton Gomi and Chaunce Lovett, who both shot 142, topped the Oahu qualifying Saturday at the Ala Wai golf course. The top two alternates are David Kang and Regan Lee, who both shot a 143.

University of Hawaii's Mike Pavao, the reigning WAC individual champion, will be among those in the Big Island qualifying Saturday at the Hilo Municipal course. Three qualifiers will come out of the Maui sectional qualifying, also on Saturday at Waiehu.



BEST OF THE WEST

Three Hawaii teams are competing in the fourth Best of the West high school baseball tournament that began yesterday at Rainbow Stadium.

Leeward, Hawaiian Stars and West Oahu represent Hawaii in the 10-team tournament that runs through Saturday. There is no admission charge for the games that are held from 12:30 to 8 p.m. weekdays, and 8 a.m. through the 7 p.m. final on Saturday.

In Pool A are Leeward, California teams Rug Doctor, Santa Cruz and Sacramento and North Phoenix from Arizona. Hawaiian Stars and West Oahu are in Pool B with Woodland (Calif.), Westmoore (Okla.) and Tucson (Ariz.).The Hawaiian Stars started the tournament in a big way yesterday with a 19-3 victory over Woodland.



TAE KWON DO PARTICIPANTS

Sixteen students from Smith Tae Kwon Do Center and 10 from Oahu Tae Kwon Do Center will compete in the Junior Olympic Tournament at Orlando, Fla., June 26-30.

Each student qualified by placing either first, second or third at the March state championships. The youths are 7 to 14 years old.

Competing from Smith TKD Center are: Dana Keolanui, Michael Carriero, Stevie Babcock, In Song Marshall, Sara Lum, Kristen Demello, Kuen Pal and Tiana Saffery. Also, Bhinna Park, Kekoa Masutani, Louis Mansanas Jr., Colling Mansanas, Matt Kanahele, David Kanahele, Cris Procopio and Crockett Gonzalves.

From Oahu TKD Center are: Sapphire Anderson, Brassie Anderson, Kim Theos, Vincent Cecilio and Christine Largosa. Also, Felip Tran, Kelly Bongolan, Shinko Maeyoshimoto, Mark Soriano and Kristan Sanders.



STATE BEACH VOLLEYBALL

Hawaii's top beach doubles teams will vie for more than $6,000 in prize money at the sixth Emporio Armani Hawaii State Beach Volleyball Championships, Aug. 24-25, at Queen's Surf Beach.

WAHIAWA HOSTS TOURNAMENT

The Wahiawa Bobby Sox League will host the All-Star District softball tournament, July 13-17 at Fred Wright Park.

There are three divisions: Bobby (9-11 year olds), American girls (12-13) and American Girls AAA (14-15), with a total of 21 teams.

Opening ceremonies are July 13 at 8 a.m.
