Flash, dash
mark Chanel's big bash

CHANEL tossed one of the flashiest parties of the year Sunday night at its four boutiques in Ala Moana Center and Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center. Fashionable Christina Kemmer read a proclamation for Chanel from Mayor Jeremy Harris, which she presented to Chanel regional V.P. Joyce Okano Reed. Former Mayor Frank Fasi also had a key supporter there - wife Joyce, always a fashion plate. Many guests wore Chanel outfits. Among those dressed in their Sunday best were Carol Applebaum, Sarah Richards, Kanoe Miller, SuAnn Bamer, Claire Lau and Cherye Pierce. Chanel brought in a dozen models from L.A. and hired a few local models for the fashion show and jewelry show. All had the extremely thin, anorexic look. I was told by former model Cynthia Child that this is the "High Fashion" look. If this is "High Fashion" I must be a low brow. Give me a few pounds more, please. The new line has much more to offer than Coco Chanel's "little black dress." The evening and cocktail dresses were especially hot. But those ugly square, flat, clunky shoes gotta go ...

THE VASCONCELLOS boys, Hank and Ticky, were two of Roosevelt High's finest football coaches. Hank died last Feb. 26 at age 84 and Ticky's heart gave out June 7 during bypass surgery, said Mike Vasconcellos, Hank's son. Ticky was 81. Mike said that in the past two months Ticky often spoke about Hank. The brothers were track and field standouts at Kamehameha and San Jose State College. When Hank moved up to coach at UH, Ticky replaced him at Roosevelt and set winning records. I was one of Hank's first RHS boys in 1948 and got to know Ticky. At Hank's funeral, I told Ticky that Hank told me about them stowing away on an ocean liner when the San Jose football team sailed for Honolulu to play UH shortly before World War II. (Mike said the brothers stowed away to get to San Jose in the first place.) "Better not print that story," Ticky said, "they might come after me." We enjoyed a welcome laugh. But I'm sure the cruise line has no desire to track the brothers beyond those Pearly Gates, where they are no doubt golfing and talking football together ...

Pun class honors Ray Hong

TEN YEARS ago, Ray Hong arranged for his 50th Punahou class reunion to be held at his House of Hong restaurant. Ray wanted them to return in 10 years in 1996. Ray died in 1988, but his classmates returned last weekend and dedicated their 60th to Ray at House of Hong. Ray's widow, Clara, was guest of honor ...

Wendy Nagaishi
THE FOOD must have been good at the June 3 wedding reception for Nick's Fishmarket G.M. David Nagaishi and his girlfriend of seven years, Royal Hawaiian concierge Wendy Layosa. Friends said it was about time they tied the knot. A luau was held at the Waikiki Aquarium with Kimo Kahoano as emcee and music by Kanilau. Later came champagne toasts and wedding cake at Nick's. The newlyweds have six kids between them ...

KIT SAMSON and his Sound Advice are no longer at the Waikiki Beach Hotel. Now is a good time for the Kahala Mandarin to snap them up. Many people want to get dressed up and go to nice lounge to sip a few and dance or listen to good music ...

An unwelcome call

EARLY yesterday there was a call for my wife from someone doing a tobacco company survey. The call ended fast when I told the caller that Brita, a smoker, died Feb. 28, 1995, of cancer. She was only 55 ...
