Sign to shine

Pearl City Library celebrates Deaf Awareness Day with stories, music and fun, with sign language interpretation provided for all events, 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Guests include Linda Lambrecht, "Deaf Hawaii's Favorite Storyteller"; Ed Chevy, master of music and mime; Walt Novak, author of "The Haole Substitute"; and Miss Deaf Hawaii 1995 Kristine Hayashi. The library is at 1138 Waimano Home Road.

Arthur Suehiro signs copies of "Honolulu Stadium: Where Hawaii Played" at Honolulu Book Shops, Ala Moana, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Borders, Ward Centre, at 2 p.m.

Unity minister Joan Gattuso, author of "A Course in Miracles," presents "A Course in Love," noon at Borders, Ward Centre. She discusses "holy relationships"; her latest book, "Love," explores human relationships.

She also visits Borders, Waikele, at 4 p.m.

Amanda Quick, a k a Jayne Ann Krentz, signs her latest romance novel, "Mischief," 4 p.m. at Borders, Ward Centre.

Readings

Jane Hirshfield, a guest lecturer at the Volcano Writers Conference, reads her poetry and talks about her work as co-translator and editor of Japanese poetry, 7:30 p.m. June 21 at the Old Japanese Schoolhouse in Volcano Village.

Other guest lecturers, playwright Darrell Lum and creative nonfiction writer Gretel Ehrlich, read from their current works 7 p.m. June 22 at Cooper Center on Wright Road. These readings are free. Call the Volcano Art Center at 967-8222, Big Island.

"Success Made Easy": Ron Martin, $23.95, 111 pages, Success Dynamics

How-to book describes the author's philosophy of achievement with applications for goals in areas from business to weight loss. Anecdotes accompany problem-solving approaches, with graphs to goad you to start.

Martin is owner of Success Dynamics, which provides customer service, sales training and employee motivation programs. He plans to release a second book, "Retail Selling Made Easy," sometime this summer.

The book carries endorsements by several Hawaii business leaders, including environmental artist Wyland.

"Blood of Patriots": Neil Abercrombie and Richard Hoyt, $24.95, 351 pages, Forge

This political fiction novel opens with terrorists invading the Capitol on the day that members of Congress are set to vote on a controversial policy for replacing paper currency with plastic. For maverick agent James Burlane, a former CIA man commissioned to uncover the identity and motives of the conspirators, the investigation begins with the consequences of traceable money.

Hoyt, a former counterintelligence agent, is the author of "Tyger! Tyger!" and "Snake Eyes." He has teamed with the congressman from Hawaii to create a story about militias, political donations and the U.S. government.

"God and Mammon: Chronicles of a Connecticut Family": Alfred M. Bingham, Abeel & Leet

This is a family biography of the sternly religious, impoverished Binghams, who founded the first Protestant mission in Hawaii, and shows how their inheritance of the Tiffany fortune affected their lives.

Spanning two centuries, the book describes the intertwining of the Bingham and Tiffany families - "a cataclysm of the forces of God and Mammon" - and the tragic, often scandalous, fortunes of their descendants.

The author, a writer, attorney and former legislator who is now in his 90s, is the great grandson of Charles Tiffany, founder of Tiffany & Co., and of the Rev. Hiram Bingham, who translated the Bible into Hawaiian. Among his other books are "Portrait of an Explorer:Hiram Bingham, Discoverer of Machu Picchu." He also founded the magazine Common Sense.
