Shinyama, 16, the daughter of Ryan and Cupid Shinyama of Lahaina, is head of the Lahainaluna Traffic Safety Team, a group of volunteer students who sponsor alcohol-
free events and educational projects.
She worked with classmates to organize an alcohol-free party after the Junior Prom in April.
She also helped to organize a conference at Kalama Intermediate School during Drug Awareness Week in February.
She and other Traffic Safety Team members sometimes hold signs on the side of roads asking motorists not to drink if they're driving.
Shinyama, who has a 3.8 grade point average, has done well academically. She's taking honors English this year and plans to take an advanced-placement class in history in her senior year.
"She's very conscientious, very involved in class," said her English teacher, Anne Goff.
Shinyama was recently selected by Mothers Against Drunk Drivers to be the Hawaii representative at the organization's national conference next month in Dallas.
Shinyama, who also works as a volunteer at the Lahaina Public Library, said she likes working on service projects.
"It makes me feel like I'm helping people," she said.
