OPENING

"Once Upon One Time": Musical presentation of fairy tales, local-style, 8 p.m. Friday, Diamond Head Theatre. Lisa Matsumoto is Da Wicked Queen, with Patrick Fujioka as Da Mean Mongoose, Eddy Gudoy as Narratah 2, Jill Y. Shimabukuro as Red Rose Haku and Alec Shimizu as Da Prince. "Tony and Tina's Wedding": Off-Broadway delight invites the audience to a tacky, hilarious nuptial celebration, 7 p.m. Wednesday, Manoa Valley Theatre. Here, the wedding unites two families, one from New York and the other from Hawaii. Family members include Mark and Hoku Gilbert, Bruce Hale, Terri Madden and Andrew Sakaguchi. Directed by Ray Bumatai. Repeats 7 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays and 4 p.m. Sundays through July 14. Admission $40, including dinner and a glass of champagne for the "toast." "The Elephant Man": True story of a sensitive, intelligent man whose body is hideously deformed. ASATAD features Allen Sutterfield in the title role, with Gary L. Anderson, Diana Carter Anderson and Beth Madden; Jonel Langenfeld-Rial is guest director. "Fortinbras": Comic epilogue to the tragic "Hamlet" begins with the predicament of the prince of Norway, who finds that the entire royal family of Denmark has died. Directed by Lisa A. Kramer. "Gypsy": Musical based on the memoirs of performer Gypsy Rose Lee. Liz Schaller plays the strip-tease artist, with Shari Lynn as her notorious stage mother, Mama Rose. Featuring cameos by UH president Kenneth Mortimer, Jimmy Borges, Kirk Matthews and others -- with a different "guest artist" each show. Directed and choreographed by John Rampage; musical direction by Emmett Yoshioka. Repeats 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday at Leeward Community College Theatre. "Wedding" rehearsal: Manoa Valley Theatre presents a preview of the wacky and delightfully tacky celebration of "Tony & Tina's Wedding," 1 p.m. Saturday at Kahala Mall Center Stage.

Mrs. Hawaii 1996 Pageant: Twenty women vie for the title and more than $25,000 in gifts and prizes, 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Sheraton Waikiki Hotel. Tickets $27 in advance, $35 at the door. Call L.A. Image Productions at 591-0588. The ladies will make a public appearance by the hotel's pool 2 p.m. Saturday for the photogenic and physical fitness sections of the contest.

Communication considerations: Hyacinth Gaudart from the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, leads a simulation that encourages participants to examine themselves and their success as cross-cultural communicators, noon to 2 p.m. Thursday in the Yukiyoshi Room, UH-Manoa's Krauss Hall.
