An old record reveals
a treasured note

STEVE Murin was happy just to find a copy of a long out-of-print vinyl record album by Arthur Tennent. When he inspected his find more closely, he realized he'd unknowingly acquired two additional treasures.

The first was a printed program from a 1969 faculty recital Tennent had given at Punahou in commemoration of the 80th birthday of his mother, famed artist Madge Tennent.

The second was a handwritten draft of a letter Madge Tennent had written on Christmas Day 1960, thanking music critic and radio personality Ben Hyams for announcing that music from her son's album would be featured on an upcoming broadcast (The show aired January 15, 1961.)

Murin knows that somewhere in the world there is an autograph collector, art dealer or Madge Tennent fan who would pay big bucks for that latter. He has other plans for it.

Arthur Tennent celebrates his 80th birthday with a concert Saturday at the Academy of Arts.

On stage with him will be pianist, Estrella Larioza, accompanist on his most recent album, "Cornucopia of Song," which he recorded with his son, actor and baritone soloist Leslie "Buz" Tennent, in 1992.

Murin will be there, too. He has decided to forego personal financial gain from his fortunate discovery and will formally donate the items to the Tennent family archives in a brief presentation at intermission.

"To a collector the letter's a treasure because it shows Madge Tennent as a mother rather than as a great artist - thanking Ben Hyams and including information about her son's days at Punahou. I love her work and I want to help the gallery, but I'll let them decide whether to keep it or auction it off."
