
Eleven of Hawaii's top karate students were the main force as the United States finished second in the Junior World Karate Championships held in Johannesburg, South Africa, June 6-9.
The Hawaii competitors, from the International Karate Federation and the Japan International Karate Center, won a total of nine gold medals, four silver medals and four bronze medals.
South Africa, which entered the most participants, barely edged the U.S for the title.

Saturday, starting at 1 p.m., there will be men's and junior competition, with the finals scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
Sunday's schedule has 10 youth events starting at 1 p.m.
Launched in 1995, the program is part of Vibram's National Trails Day participation and seeks the top volunteer is each state as demonstrated by his or her dedication to maintaining and improving hiking trails.

For the first time, this event will not be part of the Hawaii Grand Prix Circuit and the professional money purse has been eliminated.

Tickets for the tournament go on sale at the MGM Grand on Aug. 1 and may be ordered by calling the same number. An all-session pass is $30 and a single session $8.
