Hawaii competitors pace U.S.
to second-place world finish

Eleven of Hawaii's top karate students were the main force as the United States finished second in the Junior World Karate Championships held in Johannesburg, South Africa, June 6-9.

The Hawaii competitors, from the International Karate Federation and the Japan International Karate Center, won a total of nine gold medals, four silver medals and four bronze medals.

South Africa, which entered the most participants, barely edged the U.S for the title.

The following participants from Hawaii won medals:



50TH STATE KICKBOXING

The Hawaii Kickboxing Association will conduct bouts Saturday and Sunday at the 50th State Fair in the Coors Cantina tent.

Saturday, starting at 1 p.m., there will be men's and junior competition, with the finals scheduled to start at 3 p.m.

Sunday's schedule has 10 youth events starting at 1 p.m.



DEROY CITED

Betty DeRoy has been recognized as Hawaii's Vibram Volunteer of the Year.

Launched in 1995, the program is part of Vibram's National Trails Day participation and seeks the top volunteer is each state as demonstrated by his or her dedication to maintaining and improving hiking trails.



WOMEN'S TOURNAMENT

The 46th Moanalua Women's Invitational golf tournament will be held June 20-21 at the Moanalua Golf Course.

Applications for the 36-hole tournament are still being accepted. For those interested, telephone Millie Viela at 839-4375 for more information.



WAILEA TENNIS

The 12th annual Wailea Open Tennis Championships are scheduled for July 4-7 at the Wailea Tennis Club.

For the first time, this event will not be part of the Hawaii Grand Prix Circuit and the professional money purse has been eliminated.

As a result, entry fees have been decreased from $35 to $25 and there will be prizes awarded for all divisions. The entry deadline is June 29. For more information, call (808) 879-1958 on Maui.



AJA SENIOR TOURNAMENT

The 34th annual AJA Senior Golf Tournament will be held July 9 at the West Loch Course. The event is open to men 60 and over and women 55 and over.

WAC VOLLEYBALL TOURNEY

The Western Athletic Conference women's volleyball tournament will be held Nov. 26-30 at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas.

Reservations for the week of Nov. 24 through Dec. 1 at the MGM Grand can be made by calling 1-800-929-1111 and asking for the WAC Volleyball Tournament Package, which is being offered at a rate of $89 a night.

Tickets for the tournament go on sale at the MGM Grand on Aug. 1 and may be ordered by calling the same number. An all-session pass is $30 and a single session $8.
