Reds win to split with Tsunami

LIHUE - The Yakima (Wash.) Reds defeated the Hawaii Tsunami, 2-1 in a shootout yesterday afternoon in a United Systems of Independent Soccer League match at Vidinha Stadium.

The Tsunami (3-4) split the weekend series with the Reds, winning Saturday night, 1-0, at Aloha stadium on a goal by Manny Catano.

Yesterday, Jon Pak put the Tsunami ahead, 1-0, 25 minutes into the first half. Geoff Zawtocki set up the goal.

The Reds (4-4) tied it in the first 10 minutes of the second half on a goal by Jeffrey Perry.

In the shootout, Cris Gilmore scored for the Tsunami, and newly signed Hawaii goalkeeper Chris Carniato stopped three of five Yakima shots.

Antone Gutierrez got the shutout in goal for Hawaii on Saturday night.

The Reds retained control of fourth place in the Western Division of the USISL's Pro League. The Tsunami are in fifth, but must overtake Yakima to qualify for a postseason playoff berth.



McCLEAN DECLARED WINNER

When rain washed out yesterday's final round of the championship flight after nine holes at the Makena South Golf Course on Maui, Dick McClean was declared the winner of the Maui Open.

McClean had a 36-hole score of 138 in winning his fourth Maui Open title.

Brian Sasada and Lance Suzuki tied for second place at 142.



SANDLIN WINS FOUR MEDALS

Kristina Sandlin, representing Hawaii Kai's Oahu Club, won three gold medals in the National Masters Swimming Championships in Cupertino, Calif., recently.

Competing in the 25-29 age group, Sandlin won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events and the 50-yard butterfly. She also took a bronze in the 100-yard butterfly.



RUN FOR THE RAIN FOREST

The Nature Conservancy of Hawaii's 5-K road race, "Run for the Rain Forest" is set for July 7, starting at the Manoa Recreation Center.

The entry fee is $18 per person, $25 after June 30. Enter as a team of 10 or more and save $3 per entry. For more information, call Kevin Doyle at 537-4508.



TRACK & FIELD MEET

The Hawaii finals for the Hershey National Youth Track and Field Program will be held July 13 from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at UH's Cooke Field.

Registration is free, and forms are available at all city and country playgrounds, track clubs and military recreation facilities. The entry deadline is July 2.

The top qualifiers get a trip to Hershey, Pa., to compete in the national meet.
