Witnesses said the victim appeared to be racing with another driver in the Honolulu-bound lanes at about 9:20 p.m.
The Marine, traveling in the right lane, overtook the other vehicle before switching to the center lane.
He then lost control of his car as it slid sideways on the wet roadway. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:48 p.m.
