Two men injured, one critically,
after officer opens fire

Two men were injured -- one critically -- after a police officer fired shots during what appeared to be a routine traffic stop early today in Pearl City.

One man was taken to Kapiolani Hospital at Pali Momi. The other showed up at Queen's Hospital about four hours later. His condition is unknown.

At about 12:20 a.m., an officer called dispatchers to check on a license plate number of a car that turned out to have been reported stolen. As other officers converged on the car at Hekaha Street and Moanalua Road, the car struck a policeman's car and the driver tried to flee. One of the officers drew his revolver and shots were fired.

Cayetano shoots down
parties' proposals

Gov. Ben Cayetano is breaking with fellow Democrats on a proposal to raise income taxes for those in the highest tax bracket.

Delegates to the recent state democratic convention endorsed the proposal. It would raise taxes for couples earning $40,000 a year or more and individuals earning more than $20,000 a year. The additional money would fund health and social programs.

Cayetano says there's no need for a tax increase because the state's economy is improving. He's also criticizing Republicans for proposing random drug testing of welfare recipients. That proposal was approved at the recent state Republican convention.

Home spared of fire,
suspect sought

The three-bedroom home was not damaged, and no one was injured. Police are investigating the case as seven attempted murders and two reckless endangerings.
