Pun football, basketball and baseball teams he coached over a 30-year span won 765 games, lost 211 and tied 11. Even an old "has-been," or better yet, a "never was" at archrival Roosevelt High in the late 1940s when Dave starred in three sports for Punahou, is impressed with that record. IT'S SAD to be writing an obituary for Hanatei Bistro, where chef and vice president OnJin Kim put out French cuisine with a flavorful Asian spin, as well as delicious music. Hanatei died last Sunday after the close of business. That means no more gentle acoustic jazz by the Greg Pai Trio, which enhanced the bistro's ambience on weekends. Drummer Pai, who uses brushes rather than sticks on the skins, Steve Jones on the big string bass and pianist Ed Weber, a visual delight as he weaves and sways to the music, don't just play a song. They give standards, such as "Darn That Dream," "My Romance" and "All the Things You Are," tender loving care - embracing and caressing the melody with deep, flowing feeling.
