Bernard Dunham, Punchbowl: "Sumo wrestlers are the only 600-pound athletes who can slam dunk a basketball and bring half the arena down, or steal second base and send the shortstop 15 rows deep into the left field bleachers, play goalie in hockey and not even let the opponents see the net, or play goal-line defense in football all by themselves."
Bill Fuson, Honolulu: "Each sport has great athletes. You have guys making great catches in football, guys who can hit 90-mph fastballs in baseball, basketball's spin moves and dunks, golf has its finesse."
Cathy Malama, Makiki: "ILH wrestling."
Steven Sturm, Waialua: "Track and field. It demands a wide diversity of skills. And it's a pure athletic exercise. The decathlon champion is always called the world's best athlete."
Helena Heu, Honolulu: "UH men's volleyball, of course.
London Orikasa, Pearl City: "I think golfers are the best. They need good eye-hand coordination, tremendous strength and mental toughness, which is not required in other sports."
Walter Oshiro, Aiea: "Horse jockeys are the best athletes around."
Ed Hirai, Punchbowl: "Amateur boxers, like Blaise Soares, who has accomplished so much here and on the mainland."
Robert Hose Jr., Pearl City: "The NFL has the best athletes. Each team has at least one or two superstars and some other great players."
Arthur Angora, Kaneohe: "Wrestling. You have to be physically fit and make weight. It's a team and individual sport, and makes you a great all-around athlete."
