A 'Boy'-crazy Molokai girl

Molokai girl Darryl-Lynn Dudoit would probably be the envy of many city kids.

Her best friend is Boy - not a plastic toy, but a blond-brown horse she rides.

Dudoit, 11, has entered numerous rodeos, participating in such events as barrel racing with Boy. She practices her riding at her uncle's arena.

"I'm not scared because I'm used to it," Dudoit said.

Teacher Dora Lukonan said Dudoit takes the initiative to try new things.

"A lot of kids have to be coaxed," said Lukonan. "She has the kind of courageousness you don't see a lot of in students this age. She is very humble and willing to take chances."

In group assignments, Dudoit will "take the lead and guide the group on how to finish the project," said Joyce Mondoy, computer teacher at Kualapuu.

"Darryl-Lynn is the kind of student you wish you had 28 more in your classroom," Mondoy said. "In the computer lab she can be found helping other students with word processing skills or just teaching them a new skill.

"She has a warm personality and a pleasant disposition."

Dudoit, who has a 4.0 grade-point average, will attend Kamehameha Schools next year. The daughter of Carla and Albert Dudoit is one of three students from the Friendly Isle to be accepted.

She is a member of the school service organization Poki Hoaloha Club.
