Get medieval on someone Sunday

Watch as knights in shining armor do battle, pose for a portrait in a medieval costume and dance to the sounds of a lute at the Day of Knights - A Medieval Faire at the Honolulu Academy of Arts Sunday.

The Society of Creative Anachronism will recreate a Middle Ages atmosphere. There will be spinning and calligraphy demonstrations, puppet shows, a story-telling juggler, crafts for children to make, stilt-walkers and food and drinks.

Admission to the event, which runs from 1 to 5 p.m., is $1 for adults, free for Academy members and kids under 12.

There also will be a showings of the Disney film, "A Kid in King Arthur's Court," at 1 p.m., 2:40 p.m. and 4:20 p.m. at the Academy Theatre. Admission for the movie is $2 for adults, $1 for children under 12.



Cyril 'n' Ledward: Nuffsed

The Hawaii Guitar Festival '96 concerts begin Saturday with performances by slack-key heavyweights Cyril Pahinui and Ledward Kaapana.

The music begins at 8 p.m. at Orvis Auditorium on the University of Hawaii-Manoa campus. Tickets are $12, $10 for students and seniors. For concert tickets, call 956-3836.

Kaapana also will lead a workshop from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday. To register, call 956-7221.



How the universe began

"Circle of the Sun," a world beat opera presented by Lila Kane, will take place Friday through Sunday at Mid-Pacific Institute's Bakken Theater.

The opera offers an original myth of the creation of the universe in song and dance. The base for the music is provided by taiko and African drums and the dance, performed by elaborately masked artists, is inspired by a variety of world cultures.

Friday and Saturday performances begin at 7:30 p.m. The Sunday show begins at 2 p.m. Tickets are $25 reserved, $15 general admission, $12 for seniors and students and $10 for children under 12. Information: 948-3311.
