Red, ripe, delicious cherries are popping up.
Most of the grocery stores have yet to see the first of the juicy, red fruit to arrive, but at Daiei, where just last month cherries were selling for $6.99 off-season, the price has been drastically lowered to a cool $2.98 per pound. Foodland has them at $2.99 a pound.
Cherries are rich in potassium, packing 191 milligrams per handful. Cherries also contain vitamins C and B complex, as well as calcium, phosphorus and iron.
To select the perfect fruit, choose cherries that are plump and bright in color. Bing cherries range from brilliant red to mahogany and represent the major portion of the cherry crop. Mahogany colored fruit are considered to be the most flavorful. Avoid overly soft of shriveled fruit and those with dark-colored stems.
Later in the season, we may look forward to the arrival of Lambert cherries which are heart-shaped and more elongated than the Bing cherry. These are usually available one to two weeks after the first Bing cherries arrive.
But man does not live by cherries alone. At Star Market, the best buy is honeydew melon at 49 cents a pound. Another summer favorite, watermelon, is available at Sack N Save for 17 cents a pound.
In the butcher department, a boneless cross rib roast is selling for $1.99 at Safeway.
And don't forget the graduates. Foodland is offering a number of pupu platters for casual celebrations. One with zucchini sticks, jalapeno poppers, fish nuggets and mozzarella sticks sells for $19.99 and serves 8 to 10. A "Wings to Go" platter serving 15 to 20 costs $24.99. Party on!
