Joining Garcia and Ho in the quarterfinals are Richard Lovett, Gary Elkerton, Jake Paterson, Peterson Rosa, Shane Beschan and defending champion Kelly Slater.
In the "Women who surf in the Deep Blue Sea" specialty event, world champion Lisa Andersen will face Layne Beachley in the finals. Andersen eliminated Lynette MacKenzie in today's fourth round.
Menendez replaces Frank Doyle, who coached the Hawaii Tsunami for one year and has been GM of the team for three years. Doyle resigned to become head men's soccer coach at Hawaii Pacific.
The four-mile event, which will begin at 8 a.m., features cash prizes in the men's and women's open, masters, wheelchair and roller-blade divisions.
The men's and women's open division winners each will get $1,000. Second place for both men and women is worth $500, and third place is worth $250.
First-place finishers in the masters, wheelchair and skating divisions will get $500, while the runners-up will receive $250.
To qualify for the prize money, a participant must be a resident of Hawaii as of April 1, 1995. High school and college distance runners also may participate, but they must notify race officials in writing that they will not accept prize money, to keep amateur status.
