By Paul ArnettThe Army base jumps into the bidding war to host the UH football fall camp
At least that's the way new University of Hawaii head football coach Fred vonAppen viewed it after talking with Inouye aid Alexis Lum yesterday morning.
Lum wanted to know if it was too late for Schofield Barracks to put in a bid to have the Hawaii football team hold its fall camp there this August.
"I told him it wasn't too late," vonAppen said. "And that's good because they have some really nice grass fields out there.
"They have to examine all the logistics, but they said they were very interested in having us. Sen. Inouye was instrumental in getting them into the works.
"He had read about the other bases (Kaneohe and Barbers Point) putting in bids and wondered if Schofield could do the same. We may go out there and take a look on Friday."
VonAppen first entertained thoughts of holding fall camp on a military base a couple of weeks ago. He and his coordinators already have visited Barbers Point and the Marine base in Kaneohe.
"Our target date was this week," vonAppen said. "But we don't mind waiting until next week to reach a decision. The folks at Schofield said they needed 48 hours to check things over.
"They didn't know what we needed, so I told them about the meeting areas with relationship to the fields. There are some other things that also need to be discussed."
VonAppen said the players and coaches would remain on the base from around Aug. 10 until the weekend before schools starts (Aug. 26).
"If the players drive their cars on the base, we'll probably ask them to turn in their keys," vonAppen said.
"It will be easy to control their outside activities. They can't leave without going through the gates."
