By Pat Bigold
Star-Bulletin

Leilehua High School athletic director Richard Townsend has been named to succeed Dwight Toyama as coordinator for Oahu Interscholastic Association football.

The 52-year-old Townsend, who succeeded Hugh Yoshida as athletic director at the school eight years ago, will oversee a $100,000 operating budget for the 21-team league.

"I think Dick has the experience to do a great job," said Toyama, who will resign as Kaimuki High athletic director in July to become executive director of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association.

Townsend was an assistant football coach to Yoshida from 1983 to 1986. The Mules won the Prep Bowl championship in 1984.

At Yoshida's request, Townsend served as an assistant to former head coach Gary Clark for the first three years (1987-1989) of his tenure as AD.

Townsend said he's excited about the new 12-team format for the OIA playoffs.

The playoffs have expanded from eight teams. They now include five entries from the Red Conference, four from the White Conference and three from the Blue.

The consolation tournament known as the "Conference Playoffs," has been eliminated.
