City open to suggestions on
speed-bump locations

QUESTION: How do I go about getting speed bumps installed on the street where I live?

Our house is on Mamalu Street just off Alewa Drive.

Mamalu is used as a straight stretch to avoid many of the switchbacks on Alewa. There is a "slow" sign at the entrance but motorists speed up and down the street. I worry about my children, my cat and my guests who have to cross the street regularly.

I just returned from a weekend in Berkeley, where they solved similar problems with speed bumps on certain streets.

I think that's what Mamalu needs but I have no idea how to start the ball rolling.

ANSWER: Put your request in writing and mail it to: City Department of Transportation Services, Attentionn: Traffic Engineering Division, 711 Kapiolani Blvd., 12th Floor, Honolulu 96813.

Provide the location and explain the problem you want to correct. "We will investigate and consider various options," said Peter Ho, chief of the traffic engineering division.
