Wait no longer to treat yourself or someone you love to summer fruit.

Summer fruit is fresh, delicious treat

Pining for pineapple in those summery fruit salads, compotes, salsas and smoothies?

Then, head for Daiei, where fresh pineapple is selling for 28 cents a pound - that's a best buy $1.40 for a juicy five-pounder.

Hawaii, crown princess of pineapple production, grows 345,000 tons of pineapple valued at more than $87 million. Look for pines slightly soft to the touch with full, strong color and no sign of greening. Pineapple is a fair source of vitamins C and A.

Add to those colorful fruit trays and fruit cups other best buys, such as cantaloupe at 39 cents a pound at Star Markets, 47 to 49 cents at Sack N Save, Foodland and IGA.

Red Delicious apples go for 68 cents a pound at Daiei, while gala apples are three for a dollar at Foodland and 87 cents a pound at Sack N Save.

A 12-ounce basket of strawberries costs 97 cents at Sack N Save and 99 cents at Foodland. Don't forget kiwi at three for $1 at Safeway, and a bunch of bananas at 69 cents a pound at Safeway and 89 cents at Times.

Also, medium Island Fresh eggs are only 89 cents a dozen at Star.
