Weinberg grant requests
must be made by letter

QUESTION: Where does a person get the application forms to apply for grants from the Weinberg Foundation? I've heard it gives money to churches, schools, hospitals and other organizations. Is that true?

ANSWER: Yes. The grants go to nonprofit organizations that provide programs or services to help the poor and needy. The foundation made grants of $55 million in its most recent fiscal year, including $17 million in Hawaii, said Gailene Wong, grants director in Honolulu. The late Harry Weinberg was a successful businessman, well-known as chairman of Honolulu Rapid Transit.

There are no prepared application forms, Wong said. Persons seeking a grant for their group should write a letter explaining how the organization helps the poor and how a grant would be used. Mail the request to Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation Inc., 3660 Waialae Ave., Suite 400, Honolulu 96816.
