Tsunami split games on road

On its first road trip of the season, the Hawaii Tsunami professional soccer team scratched out a victory over an amateur team Saturday night, but fell yesterday to their first U.S. Interregional Soccer League Western Conference opponent.

At Fontana, Calif., the Montclair Falcons jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first half, and finished with a 4-1 victory over the Tsunami (2-2). Hawaii coach Andrew Rowley said frequent substitutions seemed to work to some degree in the second half, when the only Tsunami goal was scored by Chris Gilmore.

On Saturday at Fullerton, Calif., the Tsunami defeated the Southern California Gunners, 1-0, on a free kick by Jeff Zawtocki in the second half. Zawtocki, a former All-Ivy League midfielder at Dartmouth, got an assist from former Aiea star John Pak.

"We dominated the game," said Rowley, even though the field at Cal-State Fullerton was very narrow. Rowley said the Gunners, an amateur team from the Premier League, played an offside trap, "which made the room even less."

Rowley was upset by the officiating, noting that former Pearl City star Jerry Proctor was taken down twice on breakaways, but no fouls were called.

"Both should have been red cards, which would have meant shootouts for us," he said.
