Burned-out family has another home

Question: What ever happened to the house up at Alewa Heights that burned down in early April which left a family of five and a lot of birds homeless?

Answer: "Insurance is still working on it," said Heinz Stohner, owner. "I'm waiting for all the estimates to come together and see what's happening, but they have to tear it down."

There's no way the home can be repaired, he said. "It has to be completely rebuilt -- too extensive damage."

The family has rented another place in the meantime. Some 70 exotic birds, Australian parakeets, are all in cages at the new place, Stohner said. The family cat, Mitzi, temporarily missing after the excitement of the April 4 fire at the 1534 Alewa Drive home, is there, too, he said.

"They believe that it was one of the electric outlets," Stohner said of the fire's probable cause. The family received clothing, bedding and groceries from the Red Cross in the aftermath of the sudden afternoon fire.

"We heard the fire alarm go off," which motivated Stohner's wife, Lee Anne, and two young children to grab the cat and go, Lee Anne Stohner said shortly after. But the cat kept going and didn't return until morning.
