To see what's possible go to Plants and Ponds Etc. at Windward Mall. The shop opened May 1 as a new venture by Mel and Napua Furtado of Kaneohe.
There are more than 10 different shapes and sizes of prefabricated ponds with all the accessories and equipment. You can also find plants, hanging baskets, fresh cut flowers and custom planters made by the owners' son, Matt Furtado.
"Indoor ponds have been around for a while but no one has set up a display to show people what can be done," said Mel Furtado, 59, who has operated Koolau Pets for the past 22 years.
The ponds can be as large as 200 gallons, and are covered by a 15-year warranty. They come in different shapes and depths from 14 to 22 inches. The basic pond shell sells from $50 to $350, with $150 a typical median price. Pumps and filters are extra, but Furtado says a complete small pond can be purchased for "less than $200."
There is no plumbing involved; the water just recirculates. Indoor ponds can support plants that flower even without sunlight, Furtado says.
Plants and Ponds Etc. has three ponds on display, plus other small water gardens. The shop is located across from Koolau Pets and near the JC Penney store at Windward Mall.
