You Make The Call

Some responses to our last call-in question:

Should the University of Hawaii
sports television contract be awarded to
a cable TV company and why?"

Tim Dumlao, Wahiawa: "The TV contract should be awarded to any TV company with the best deal. If it's a cable company, than let it be. Most people I know have cable, anyway, and if they don't, I'm sure they have a friend whose house they can go over to to watch the games."

Ken Hashimoto, Waikiki: "I don't think Oceanic Cable should get the TV contract for sports coverage of the UH Rainbows. Oceanic is only in it for the money and doesn't care about the sports fans. Awarding a contract to Oceanic would cause people who can't afford cable to be left out. Leave it with KFVE. I know UH needs money, but the fans must have adequate coverage."

Ben Ines, Kalihi: "Sure. Especially since they want to pay UH over $1 million. That would go a long way toward helping the men's and women's athletic programs. So why not? With Oceanic's connections to ESPN, I'm sure we could get more UH coverage and work out some kind of deal for people without cable."

Bryan Min, Waimanalo: "UH should stick with KFVE. A lot of people have KFVE on their TV and not cable. And remember the old saying, if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Nelson Mukai, Honolulu: "I don't think so. If you give it to the cable company, they won't be able to reach the young kids and the poor kids."

Robert Hose Jr., Pearl City: "I don't think Hawaii sports should go to cable. It's been like this a long time. Not everybody can afford cable; not everyone has cable."

Dennis Yoshimura, Kaimuki: "If they get the contract, they're going to make it pay-for-view. Right now KFVE has it free. But if they have it free on cable, no problem."

Takashi Ishihara, Manoa: "I don't think it should be on cable for the simple reason that I don't have cable. And I'm not going to buy it."

Kalei Aila, Moiliili: "They shouldn't. As UH sports are now, not too many go to the games or watch them on TV. Having it on cable would make it less."

Helena Heu, Honolulu: "No. That would mean you have to change the commentators, and they're great. If it does go to cable, I want the same commentators."
