Call the sheriff's office
to report boating violations

Question: What number do we use to report boating violations on the weekend? There was a motorboat off Kailua Beach pulling water skiers inside the exclusion zone last weekend. There were many swimmers; somebody could have been killed. I tried to call several marine numbers but couldn't rouse anyone.

Answer: Call 538-5600, dispatch in the sheriff's office in the state Department of Public Safety. A marine patrol officer in the field can be dispatched as needed.

There could be a change later. Legislators this year passed a bill to transfer the state marine patrol from the Department of Public Safety to the Department of Land and Natural Resources.

That measure is pending action by Gov. Ben Cayetano. If he disapproves, he has until June 19 to veto the bill. Otherwise it will become law by July 3, with or without his signature.
