Hawaii gives lift to Bradys sequel

THEY may not be making as many movies in Hawaii as they once did, and no current TV series is being filmed here, but Hawaii still has panache in Hollywood. Take the Shelly Long vehicle, "A Very Brady Sequel." Following on the heels of "The Brady Bunch Movie," this sequel's inspiration came from three episodes of the original ABC sitcom which were wrapped around a Hawaiian vacation. As producer Alan Ladd Jr. put it, "The Hawaii episodes are the ones that people remember most." Entertainment Weekly's capsule review of the flick: "We're sick of the Bradys! Wait - Hawaii? Groovy." That sums it up ...

AND, while another new flick, "Joe's Apartment," is set in Manhattan in cockroach-infested digs, a rube from Iowa ("Hi, neighbor!") rents after moving to NYC. Also in the film are local actress Megan Ward, daughter of localites Wayne & Fran Ward, and in the wildest casting of the year, Don Ho portraying a Mafioso superintendent. There were 2,000 cockroaches in the movie, which grew to 8,000 during the three-month location shoot, indicating it was party-party-party in Joe's Apartment. Entertainment Weekly again: "Could do for roaches what 'Babe' did for pigs." ...

Terrence Knapp
THE British-born isle actor probably best known for his portrayal of Father Damien on PBS, Terence Knapp will be honored for his cultural services to the community by the National Society of Arts & Letters at its 40th annual Roselani Dinner June 10 at the Kahala Mandarin Oriental Hawaii. A more deserving winner of the honor I can't imagine ... Piano teacher Ernie Chang is thrilled that a number of his students have been asked to perform June 7-9 at the Maui Chamber Music Festival (formerly known as the Kapalua Music Festival). He's having a fund-raising concert at Orvis Auditorium Sunday evening featuring Shaun Ageno, 16, winner of the 1996 Sterling Scholar Award, Nicolle Wong, 15, Randy Ozaki, 11, Ashley Alivado, 12, of Maui, and 6-year-old Austin Au. The $5 donation will help pay for the Maui trip ...

Apples a pair

Robin Leach
PINEAPPLES in the Big Apple: That was the ingredient Edwin Goto wowed the 80 people for whom he cooked dinner at the James Beard House in New York. The Lodge at Koele's exec chef wasn't about to risk lost luggage or delayed express mail; so he checked in his personal luggage and hand carried the dinner essentials: pineapple bran-smoked salmon, venison carpaccio and Kona crab. There wasn't an empty seat in the house the night of his dinner, hosted by Robin Leach. Thirty members of the press were among the 80 in attendence, among them Tim & Nina Zagat, CBS's Alex Birnbaum and reps from the New York Times, Travel & Leisure, Wall Street Journal, W, Associated Press, Redbook and McCalls. All were given orchid leis and sun visors from Lodge G.M. Kurt Matsumoto with a note, "Since you couldn't come to Lanai, we've brought Lanai to you." Leach was effusive with his praise and loved the fact that chef Goto said nothing goes to waste on Lanai. The pineapple tops are used as tee markers on the golf courses, the fruit is used for garnishes or pressed for cider, and the husks are dried and mulched into bran to give a special flavor to the fish. The evening is sure to translate into positive publicity for Hawaii ...

Lasers & dragons

FORMER UH All-American laser sailer John Myrdal placed fourth in the Olympic trials this month in Georgia, and that was enough to qualify him for the U.S. Olympics Laser Sailing Team, composed of the top five sailors. He and fellow team members will be sailing intensively with top-ranked Nick Adamson of Newport Beach, Calif., to get ready for the Olympics ... And while Loch Ness has its monster, real or imagined, there'll soon be dragons in Hawaii waters. Dragon boats, that is. Three of the vessels have been shipped here from Taiwan for the AT&T Hawaii Dragon Boat Festival June 15. They're on display from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Aloha Tower Marketplace ...
