Ikua Purdy-Watai, great-great grandson of famed paniolo Ikua Purdy, is spokeskid for the Purdy Baby Contest Friday on the Big Island.

Ride 'em paniolo

The Kamuela Hat Company, which sells cowboy clothing at Ward Warehouse and at two Big Island locations, is sponsoring a "Paniolo Social" starting at 5 p.m. Friday at Waimea Center. The event kicks off the "Bankoh Old Hawaii on Horseback" celebration over Memorial Day Weekend.

The Social will include a "Purdy Baby" contest - named after legendary paniolo Ikua Purdy - best-dressed cowboy and cowgirl contests, line-dancing instruction, and live music of both kinds, country and western.

Entry blanks can be picked up before noon Friday at the Kamuela Hat Company and Big Island Hat Company stores. Prizes include gift certificates at Kamuela Hat Company. Information: 808-885-8875.

Celebration continues

The San Francisco Bay Area Cultural Group will perform in a free concert from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the Pikake Room of the Blaisdell Center.

The concert is part of the Pagdiriwang '96 year-long celebration of the Centennial of the Philippine Revolution, the 90th anniversary of Filipino migration to Hawaii and the 50th anniversary of the arrival of the last Sakadas to Hawaii.

The 41-member choir will sing favorites from the 1920s, Broadway tunes and Filipino classics. Information: 235-8589 or 527-5762.

'SPORT'-ing life

Just in time for the Summer Olympics, the new Bishop Museum exhibit "SPORT" opens June 1 and runs through Sept. 2. Called "the ultimate in high-action science," the exhibit features more than a dozen hands-on - and bodies-on - displays that explain the science behind

athletics.

The exhibits include pitching speed, rock-climbing and motion displays, plus Bishop Museum presentations on Hawaiian sports and Hawaii sports heroes such as Duke Kahanamoku.

On the Great Lawn, the "Hawai'i Sport Pavilion" will feature daily sport demonstrations that will give audiences a chance to participate. For younger viewers, the "Sport Start" next to the Pavilion will teach kids basic sports skills.

Admission is $14.95; $11.95 for youths 6 to 17 and seniors; $7.95 and $6.95 for local residents; free for children under 6 and Museum members. Information: 847-3511.

'Elephant Man' opens

ASATAD will present "The Elephant Man" June 7 through July 7 at the Little Theatre, Windward Community College. Performances are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 6 p.m. Sundays.

"Elephant Man," the story of a hideously deformed Victorian personality whose bones were later coveted by pop-music oddity Michael Jackson, will be directed by Jonel Langenfeld-Rial. Allen Sutterfield plays the lead role.

Admission is $12. Information: 247-6939.
