"It appears to be recovering," Kimura said. "First Hawaiian Bank has a representative office to service direct contacts in Tokyo. Our job here is to maintain contacts with those Japanese companies which have offices in Hawaii."

Kimura has been with the bank for nearly 30 years, starting in 1967 as a management trainee.

He was manager of the bank's consumer service center in 1982, and seven years ago joined the Japan business development department as an assistant vice president.

Kimura earned a bachelor's degree in business administration at the University of Hawaii.
