Sixth-ranked HPU, which had defeated Pacific Lutheran three out of four meetings earlier this year, lost to the fifth-ranked Lady Lutes, 5-1, in yesterday's second round. The loss dropped the Sea Warriors (31-12) into the losers' bracket, where they were to play a loser-out game this morning against St. Joseph's of Maine.
HPU committed three errors that led to four unearned runs. The Sea Warriors managed just four hits against the Lady Lutes' Janell Guntar.
HPU's lone run came in the fifth when Tiare Geolina walked and scored on Michele Ringor's double.
The Sea Warriors will have to win seven games in a row in order to win their first national championship.
Pavao, the WAC individual champion, carded a par-71 on the 6,786-yard Stanford course and shared eighth place with four others. Leading the 54-hole, 18-team tournament is Cardinal golfer Tiger Woods at 68.
Page, a 6-foot forward from Australia, averaged 15.4 points a game for the Spartans last season. She will sit out this season and have three years of eligibility beginning in 1997-98.
"We're dang happy to have her," said Wahine assistant coach George Wolfe. "She's a real complete player. We saw some film on her from high school and she was strictly a power forward. Since we had already signed Hedy Liu (redshirt freshman forward), we didn't want to have two freshmen at the same position.
"San Jose moved her to the win and she tore up the place. When Kylie does become eligible, we expect she'll be joining a very strong, veteran team."
Page's signing ends the recruiting process for Hawaii, which moves from the Big West to the Western Athletic Conference next season. The Wahine lost one senior, all-conference pick Tania Brunton. Junior forward Stephanie Bull said she will not return.
Committing earlier to Hawaii were Raylene howard, a 5-9 forward from Australia, 6-2 junior transfer Sutton Helvey, and incoming freshman guard Kyla Evers, who finished as the Washington state AAA scoring champion with 21 points a game.
The Wahine also had three redshirts who will be eligible this fall: Liu, who was sidelined with a torn anterior cruciate ligament; 6-2 forward Brandi Ashby, a transfer from Western Kentucky; and 5-8 guard Liisa cq Kotilainen, a transfer from Arizona State who led the Pac-10 in 3-point shooting as a sophomore.
The Harlequins had a 3-1 record, losing to the San Francisco Rugby Club in the championship match.
