City to get lighting bids
for Paki playing courts

QUESTION The new pavement, fence and nets at the Paki Community Park basketball and volleyball courts are just wonderful, but where are the lights? Many of us work during the day and would use the courts in the evening. It was so good to have those courts behind the Waikiki Fire Station open again last month after being closed for months. But what a shame it is to have them stand idle in the evening because there are no lights.

ANSWER There will be lights, but you'll have to wait six to nine months. Lights were not included in the $138,830 project to rebuild those courts, but there have been so many complaints that bids for lights will be announced soon.

The lights alone may cost as much as $140,000 - more than the whole reconstruction project, according to Patti Nagao, community relations specialist for the city parks department.

Bids for installing the lights will be opened in July or August; then the contract will awarded, and then the work will be done.
