Michael Feinstein
SOME people thought I was nuts when I commented that Michael Feinstein reminded me of Paul Anka when he first appeared on stage Saturday at the Hawaii Theatre, but apparently I wasn't the only one who felt that way. He appeared in the "Cybill" episode, which aired on CBS Monday night, and the writers had him start into "Isn't It Romantic" and then segue into "Puppy Love," the big Anka hit. INTERESTING double bill of country singer Steve Young and slack-key guitar artist Ledward Kaapana at the Academy of Arts Theater Saturday night. Young, who wrote the Eagles tune "Seven Bridges Road," pioneered the "outlaw sound" in the C&W world. Young has reportedly downplayed the outlaw sound and his style is now described by promoter Kevan Scott as "gospel tinged country-blues." ...
SINGER Shari Lynn first met Henry Miyamura when he was assistant conductor of the Honolulu Symphony back in 1981 and she was a contestant in the Hawaii Music Festival, which he was conducting. Pianist Ray Kaneyama had composed "Just Once," Shari's song entry, and accompanied her during the contest. They not only won the grand prize, but also went on to take two awards at the Tokyo Music Festival. They're reuniting with Miyamura, now music director for the Hawaii Youth Symphony Association, for a special performance with the 93-piece Youth Symphony Orchestra at HYSA's benefit luncheon concert fund-raiser Sunday at the Coral Ballroom of the Hilton Hawaiian Village. And it'll be "Just Once" again, as they plan to do a reprise of the song that brought them together in the first place. Call 941-9706 for tickets or more info ...YOU like the tango, you say? Robert Stephens is in town to do some choreography for Simeon Den and Marie Takazawa of Danceworks. He'll also conduct an authentic Argentine tango workshop Sunday at the Ala Wai Clubhouse from 2 to 4 p.m. The tango is enjoying a resurgence in popularity with people like actor Robert Duvall promoting it via personal appearances and the show, "Forever Tango," a huge hit both on Broadway and across the country. It's been playing so long in San Francisco that people there felt it was most appropriately named ...
