Jesus Salud will return to Hawaii on May 31 to fight Michael Galatti of Bulgaria in a nontitle fight at Blaisdell Arena.

The former Nanakuli resident would like to meet current World Boxing Organization champion Marcos Antonio Barrera in the fall, but details remain sketchy.

"We're close to getting something lined up with him, which would be great if we can do it," Salud manager Bobby DePhilippis said last night from San Diego.

"I don't know much about this guy Jesus is fighting at the end of the month, but he is rated No. 10 by the WBO, so he'll be tough."

This will be Salud's first fight in Hawaii since he defeated Cesar Decena of Panama in November of 1994. Salud has never lost a professional fight in Hawaii.

"We were close to getting something with Barrera last year, but we took the World Boxing Association title fight with Antonio Cermeno, instead," DePhilippis said.

Salud lost that title shot last November on a unanimous decision. He traveled to Maracay, Venezuela, to fight the champion in his own back yard.

"And if we had it to do again, we wouldn't have taken it," DePhilippis said. "We had to take that fight on only 16 days' notice. Jesus told me he was in shape, but as soon as he entered the ring and started boxing, I could tell that wasn't true."

The former WBA champion has lost three title fights over the years to Cermeno, International Boxing Federation champ Kennedy McKinney in October of 1993 and IBF title holder Welcome Ncita in April of 1992.

Salud had his title stripped in April of 1990 for not fighting Luis Mendoza in his home country of Colombia. Since losing to Cermeno, the 32-year-old has won a pair of fights in Mexico to raise his record to 52-7 with 30 knockouts.

"I always love coming home and fighting in Hawaii," Salud said last night. "It's always good to see my family and friends.

"Hopefully, I'll get a shot at fighting Barrera. He's perfect for me. I know I still have plenty of fight left in me."

Salud is currently ranked No. 5 by the WBO, No. 6 by the WBA, No. 9 by the IBF and No. 11 by the World Boxing Council.

The state boxing commission will meet with the local promoters on May 20 to approve the proposed fight card.
