Wailua, Mauna Kea courses rated high

Joe Root, Paul Spengler
THE Wailua public course on Kauai has been named No. 2 in the May Golf Digest magazine's list of the top 75 affordable golf courses in America. Greens fees are no more than $50 in this category. The very reasonable greens fees for kamaainas at Wailua are $8 on weekdays and $12 on weekends, and for visitors, $25 and $35. A cart for two costs $14. "We're very proud we're offering good, challenging golf to the people of Kauai at minimal price," Wailua administrator Brian Carew said. Hawaii scored big in the top 75 upscale courses with five courses, headed by beautiful Mauna Kea, which is rated sixth in the nation. Mauna Kea golf director Joe Root said, "We're honored to be ranked highly among the golf courses on that list. We're in pretty tough company." Pebble Beach, where former islander Paul Spengler is vice president of golf operations, is rated No. 1. Spengler's operations include Spyglass Hill, rated fourth, and the Links at Spanish Bay, No. 48. Spengler credits his greens and maintenance crews for the ratings. "We're very proud of the ratings, but ratings to us are only the result of the great work the staff is doing," he said ...

THE UPSCALE list rates the Prince on Kauai at 30th; the Challenge at Manele on Lanai, 55th; Kiele on Kauai, 60th; and the Plantation at Kapalua on Maui, 63rd. Greens fees for the upscale list start at $50 and go up to $225, the fee at Pebble Beach ... Spengler was in the islands for the March 23 wedding of his daughter Kristen to Edward Kenney III, son of entertainers Ed Kenney and Beverly Noa. The former Patti Petri is the bride's mom. The groom's parents performed at the reception, along with Danny Kaleikini, Irmgard Aluli and Puamana, and Marlene Sai ...

Woods sheds sigh of relief

DAN and Judy Woods signed their state tax return and mailed it on April 20, the usual deadline day. The next day, Dan realized he had forgotten to include the check with the return. On Monday, April 22, he sped to the tax office and was told to wait for the collections department to make contact. Dan was thinking penalty all the way and said so. So the tax lady said to make a copy of the front and back of the tax form and bring it in with a check. Dan was still worried. "I drove home thinking of all the things I would have to make copies of," Dan said, "including my tax forms, check and Idiot's Club Card." But when he stopped by the Kailua Post Office to check his P.O. box for mail, he found an envelope containing his Hawaii tax forms, returned because 23 cents additional postage was needed. Dan's chest swelled with the breath of new life. He inserted a check for the amount owed, added the extra postage and remailed the tax return. Because April 20 fell on Saturday this year, Monday, April 22, was deadline day and the Woodses were home free ...

RECENTLY I received from my sister-in-law, Barbara Laminet, a birthday card mailed from France. Strange, I thought, as my birthday is in October. Then I looked at the postmark and noted it was Oct. 18, 1995. Where has that card been? ...
