ID required for all ages
to buy beer at UH arena

QUESTION: I went to a game at the University of Hawaii Special Events Arena. I tried to buy a beer but was refused because I didn't have an ID. All I had was money and my ticket stub. Nothing on the ticket said I had to have an ID. I was not trying to buy a lot of beer; I was alone and wanted only one. I'm a 50-year-old guy; they could easily see I wasn't underage. What's going on up there?

ANSWER: Anyone who wants to buy an alcoholic beverage on campus is asked for an ID, said Ralph Nakamoto, general manager for Marriott, which holds the food service contract on campus. Nakamoto said he understands your concern but to ensure that alcohol is not served to anyone under 21, "we card everyone."

"We've made a commitment to the university; we don't encourage the consumption of alcohol," Nakamoto said.

Beer is the only alcoholic beverage sold in the concession at the Special Events Arena and at the Rainbow Baseball Stadium. The license Marriott has for those two concessions also allows the sale of wine, but wine is not offered.

Marriott also has the license for the Manoa Garden, a tavern-type restaurant on campus, and sells beer, wine and other drinks there.
