Ka'aihili cited for BWC play

Rachel Ka'aihili, a freshman second baseman on the University of Hawaii women's softball team, was named the Big West Conference Player of the Week for her efforts last week.

Ka'aihili hit .600 in four games against No. 8 UNLV and drove in the winning run in the series finale. She had 14 putouts and six assists, with one error, defensively.

The Wahine finished 36-25 overall, 15-17 in their final BWC season.

Senior left fielder Julie Luft ended her career on top of four offensive categories. She ranks first in career doubles (44), RBIs (112), walks (54) and sacrifices (47).

Sophomore utility player Tia Morenz, an All-American candidate, set three single-season records - stolen bases (26), runs scored (51) and batting average (.376) - this year.



FOOTBALL LEAGUE MEETING There will be a mandatory meeting Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for all Hawaii Football League representatives in the Kula Room of the Four Seasons Resort on Maui.

It's to review last season and discuss the upcoming season.

SILVERSWORDS HONORED Sara Lacar has been selected the offensive player of the year for Chaminade's women's softball team. She also was named newcomer of the year and was one of two scholar athletes along with Tori McIntyre.

Chiho Bauske was named defensive player of the year and received the Silversword award for her four years with the team.

Kristen Varagne was named pitcher of the year.



KARATE-DO CHAMPIONSHIPS The 15th annual All-Hawaii Okinawa Karate-Do Championships will be held Sunday at the Aliamanu Military Reservation Gym.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with competition following at 9:30.

The entry fee is $10 for HKC members, $12 for non-members.
