Phillip Akiona of Kapaakea, Molokai, a retired state Highway Division heavy equipment operator, died May 6 in Maui Memorial Hospital.

Akiona, 86, was born in Kamalo, Hawaii.

He is survived by wife Luciana A.L.; sons Samuel, Gordon, Phillip "Ah Yeong" Jr. and Lawrence; daughters Emily A. Barboza, Gladys Kepaa, Myrtle Deitch, Verna Sorensen and Barbara Ballao; sisters Mary Hong and Dorothy Nihoa; 39 grandchildren; 68 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.
