'Lost weekend' for sports fans

IN the overall scheme of things, it was just another Saturday, but it was a "sadder day" for many of us, a Ray Milland kind of "Lost Weekend." It began when the horse I picked in the Kentucky Derby was "Alyrob'ed" and my beloved Dodgers lost the first of two straight weekend games to the lowly Pirates. All that seemed as nothing, however, when fate flew in the face of the UH Volley 'Bows and despite opportunities to win the National Championship, it was snatched from their grasp by UCLA and its expatriate Hawaiians. What could have been turned out to be what never was. With setter Erik Pichel graduating and Yuval Katz setting out for greener pastures (as in greenbacks!), we can't even say with conviction, "Wait'll next year." Stick around, U.V. - we have some unfinished business to take care of and there'll be even bigger paydays a year hence with a championship under your belt ...

Aileen Soule
FOLKS who bring out the best of what "venerable" stands for: Mr. & Mrs. Charles Evans, celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary last week. They owned the old Evans Market on Ala Moana and if you remember that, you are a kamaaina ... And former Olympic gold medal winner Aileen Soule, a hearty Soule, celebrated her 90th birthday at the Outrigger Canoe Club. Babe Woollett, himself 90, was among those welcoming her into that rare Nonagenarian Club. Old Babe still has an eye for the ladies as his nickname indicates, and he described the "birthday girl" as looking "as stunning and sweet as most ladies would love to look at 60." ...

AN e-mail query to former isle anchorman Bob Sevey, now living in Olympia, Washington, brought this response: "'Did we suffer in the earthquake?' you ask. They called off the baseball game! They interrupted and cancelled the all-new, one-hour 'Seinfeld'!! They never even started 'E.R.'!!! Oh, the humanity!!!!" Sevey reports the mid-sized quake left him "shaken, not stirred." He quoted wife Rosalie as saying, "I believe we just had an earthquake. One olive, or two?" (I made up the part about the olive.) ...

Three moms and Moe

Moe Keale
THE Mother's Day program at the Hawaiian Hut Sunday will feature Moe Keale with three ladies who are all mothers, Leinaala Haile, Myrtle K. Hilo and Iwalani Kahalewai. Together they bring many collective years of Hawaiian entertainment to the same stage. Two seatings for the show and buffet lunch, at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. and there are reduced prices for kupuna 55 and over and kids ages 5 to 10. Tickets are at Tower Records and the Hawaiian Kine Music Company ...

THERE'S also a Mother's Day luncheon cruise on the Navatek I Sunday from noon to 2 p.m. Lunch, musical entertainment (by Brother Greg) and a fashion show may be just the thing to unfrazzle moms who are stressed out. Call 848-6360 for reservations...Motorcycle riding champ Jeff Ward, who lately has taken to driving Indy Lite cars, is in town visiting with his in-laws who live in Honolulu... I commented to a slimmed down Russ Francis how well he looks since returning to the islands from Oregon and he admitted he now weighs two pounds less than his ideal playing weight in the NFL ...

TASTE of things to come? Two giants in the food industry, chef Sam Choy and "Ronald McDonald" will be teaming up at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Ala Moana Center Stage to make a "big announcement." Look for the burger chain to aim less toward kiddies and more to adults. ...

Cybillence

LOTS of anticipation about the appearance here of Atlantic recording star Michael Feinstein at the Saturday gala of the newly restored Hawaii Theater. And hot on the heels of his appearance in Honolulu, you can see him in a special guest spot next Monday on the CBS series "Cybill" starring Cybill Shepherd. The TV show's theme song is the title track of Feinstein's current hit album, "Nice Work If You Can Get It." Working and playing in Hawaii has to fit that bill just fine, thank you ...
