An Oahu grand jury yesterday indicted Lawrence James Norton, 56, on five counts of third-degree sexual abuse involving two girls below the age of 14 from about September 1993 to January 1995.
The indictment alleged that Norton placed his hand on the buttock of one girl an unspecified amount of times. It also alleged that he placed his hand on the buttock of a second girl.
A state Department of Education spokesperson declined comment on Norton's employment status or the case but said that he had not actively taught since January 1995.
Norton said yesterday he had no comment on the new charges.
Instead of trying to find others to buy the units, they said, the university should focus on ways to get faculty more interested in the project with only eight units sold since October 1994.
State Rep. Ed Case (D, Manoa), who served on the Manoa board when the faculty housing plans were discussed in the late 1980s, said the UH fought off attempts by the city and state to place a senior citizens project, a homeless shelter and an alternate Manoa park on the property by insisting it needed the housing.
UH officials now say the university needs to sell the remaining 22 units by June 28 or it will default on repayment of a $7.6 million loan from the state Housing Finance and Development Corp.

Family members reported Jocelyn Arenas, 33, missing April 13 after unsuccessful attempts to reach her.
Arenas kept in touch with a cousin, and family members became suspicious after she stopped calling. They stopped by the couple's Kinau Street home April 13 and questioned the husband who said she wasn't home, said Det. Joe Self of the missing person's detail.
Neighbors and friends told police they've seen only the woman's husband, Domingo Arenas Caguioa, for the past two months but recently even he has dropped out of sight.
Police have been unable to reach him.
The couple have had domestic squabbles, but the last reported to police was a couple years ago, Self said.
Caguioa has been arrested before and also goes by Jaime Arenas. He is about 6-feet tall and 180 pounds. Jocelyn Arenas is 4-feet-11 and 115 pounds.
