"Vinyline" French doors. By Kathryn Bender, Star-Bulletin

Vinyl French doors are elegant, tough

Vinyl is final, and when you combine it with a strong safety glass, you get a new French door product that has good security features.

Coastal Windows at the Gentry-Waipio Business Park is making a new "Vinyline" French door with optional security glass that the company says can't be broken open with a baseball bat.

Kurt Winner, company president, says this new glass has two layers of plastic on the inside that are glued to the vinyl frame, and this keeps the glass from shattering open if struck by a burglar trying to get through the door.

Winner says the vinyl door frames also can be made with wood on the interior side. The "Vinyline Wood Collection" has wood that's ready to be stained or painted.

The doors also use double-glazed glass, heavy duty weather stripping, a three-point locking system, and a six-way adjustable hinge system. The doors come in white, beige and bronze.

The extruded vinyl door frame pieces are made by Vinyl Building Products Inc. of Oakland, N.J. and sold to fabricators such as Coastal Windows.

Winner said the French doors will be made up in standard sizes such as 30-inches, 32-inches or 36-inches wide but can be customized with features in many styles and combinations. If you want the strong security glass, it adds about $150 to $200 to each door, he says.

Prices range from $1,400 to $3,500 per door, depending on how many extra features you want.
